Biography ~ Nick Jacobs

Nick is self-employed and runs his own commercial consultancy business with various clients based both in Europe and in the USA.  Nick advises on all commercial matters from end user customer contracts, purchasing third party products and/or services through to partnership agreements, dispute resolution facilitation, tender responses and negotiation management.

Prior to becoming self-employed Nick was EMEA Legal Services Director for Silicon Graphics, Inc. based in Reading, U.K.. In this role Nick was responsible for all legal matters that might be encountered during any of Silicon Graphics' trading and business activities throughout the EMEA Region.  In particular this meant safeguarding corporate assets, identifying, quantifying and advising on business risks to facilitate informed management decisions as well as ensuring compliance with local legal systems.  In addition Nick's team provided legal services as required (directly and indirectly) including appropriate responses to externally driven situations such as lawsuits, regulatory investigations and contract proposals.

Sponsored by Silicon Graphics, Inc., Nick is a graduate of the 2003 Banff (Canada) Executive Leadership programme.

Before transferring to Silicon Graphics from Cray Research in 1996, he was Cray Research's Contracts Manager for Europe, Africa and Asia.

Nick graduated in Radar Electronics from the Royal Air Force's No. 1 Radio School in 1964.  After managing the airfield radar installation for Concorde's initial flight trials at RAF Fairford he attended post-graduate training which led to the programming of his first analogue computer in 1969.

In 1971 he moved to programming "modern day" digital computers and since then Nick has always been associated with the IT industry.

After leaving the Royal Air Force in 1972 he

worked briefly for the Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland, USA as a Digital Techniques Consultant indirectly supporting NASA’s SkyLab 1, 2 & 3 Missions.

For the next twenty years Nick held a number of positions within Digital Equipment Corporation including software tutor, Customer Educational Services Manager, UK PC Services Support Manager, European Quality Manager and finally as UK Business Portfolio Manager before joining Cray Research in 1993.

Nick feels that his broad knowledge of both the IT industry and of the various business functions within the industry help him considerably in his current consultancy business as he is much better placed to understand and associate with his clients' business and operational requirements.

Nick is an Independent Member of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority's Standards Committee. He is also a Member of the Institute of Directors, appointed in 2003.

Nick is very much a family man enjoying the outdoor lifestyle with his wife, their two children and four grandchildren.
